Vomiting and a Sense of Humor

Sounds like an odd combination but the other day I saw a poster and I thought it read “Who’s the Funniest? Vomiting Starts June 7th.”

What it actually said was: “Who’s the Funniest? Voting Starts June 7th. The poster was for some stand up comedian contest. I figured my version was still a possible way to evaluate talent, though once you had weeded out the worst entries vomiting may cease and then a new expression of judgment might have to be used. Yet I suppose a crack panel of judges could be trained in some twisted Pavlovian way to associate excellent humor with the gag reflex. The judges then would probably want to get those mouth guards to stop the acid from destroying their teeth.

I was driving around today thinking about this whole concept of ”sense of humor.” I mean I wasn’t thinking that hard since I think it really consisted of the thought “What a weird thing this sense of humor concept is” in a seemingly endless loop. I found out that there are all kinds of theories on what a sense of humor is. All kinds of heavyweights have addressed it, like Kant and Schopenhauer. I know I didn’t want to think that hard about it. Yikes. I agree with a quote from EB White: “Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but the thing dies in the process and the innards are discouraging to any but the pure scientific mind.”

Technically, I think, a sense of humor is one’s capacity and breadth in whcuh one will find humor in the world around them. Obviously different than being funny.I think I have a broad sense of humor but there are times when I see people find in humor in the most bizarre things, which can be quite rewarding since you might find humor in their sense of humor, which in itself is humorous.

Speaking of being funny though, I know that mocking can often be quite funny (though at times it can be quite without humor if one sense of humor is not up for it). Anyway, I worked with a lady one time, very briefly, who was quite good at mocking and  sarcasm and quite funny. But the funniest thing she ever said was in reference to her penchant for mocking. She just said, “I mock therefore I am.” And that was so sweet I immediately vomited all over her shoes.
