A Rose with Any Other Smell
Smells can be so strange. I was in the basement restroom of an old building a few weeks ago. The room was clean and bright and very presentable.
An air freshener was being used to keep it smelling pleasant. Did I mention that this was in a basement in an old building. Anyway, the scent as best I could tell and can now recollect was predominantly vanilla.
I really like the smell of vanilla (as opposed to the smells of mint and cinammon, which sometimes are not pleasant). It reminds me of all kinds of foods and drinks I love like vanilla beans, vanilla ice cream, vanilla lattes, vanilla in any kind of cookie and so on. Yummy.
But the problem with this vanilla was that it was in a restroom in the basement of an old building. I can presume we all understand that sometimes the sewer systems in such places are not as air tight as we would like to them to be.
The challenge here is that the wonderful vanilla smell was paired with a subtle but lingering sewer smell. Now don’t get me wrong, I understand that a restroom of any sort(some much worse than others) will have sewer and other unsavory smells inhabiting them. And I will tell you that I am not offended by that or upset by that. That’s the smell of life going on.
Enough on bad smell. But it was DISTURBING to have it mixed with vanilla, that sweet smell associated with food. Disturbing, disturbing, disturbing. I am obviously still disturbed by it.
Please, anyone who is out there listening, please stick to pleasant air fresheners in restrooms that are not food smells. Thank you.
Ah, smells are so intriguing. Maybe they are so intriguing for the exact reasons I was so disturbed by the vanilla restroom. They are so often mixed together or seemingly out of place. I use this poly/oil blend to finish some furniture and it has this honey sweet smell comidined with a petrochemical smell that drives me crazy, perhaps literally if I inhale enough of it.
Aye, speaking of perplexing smells, I have to go paint now.
